Matt Tavares-Famous Author Comes to Steward!

The children in grades K-3 enjoyed a TESPTO sponsored program starring Matt Tavares, children's author and illustrator.  They were so engaged listening to Matt read his books aloud and speak about the writing process.  He was a talented artist at a young age and never gave up his dream by practicing and sending his book to several publishers before it was accepted.  He showed the children his rough drafts and told them how certain illustrations took up to 50 hours.  If this didn't teach the children about perseverance and effort, I don't know what will!
Matt shows the children how he starts his sketches.

This was a picture he created around the age of 8!

Trash Free Tuesday

The students at Steward School celebrated "America Recycles Day" by participating in "Trash Free Tuesday," which was coordinated by Zillie Bhuju and members of our G.R.E.E.N Committee and our Y.E.S.S (Young Earth Savers at Steward) Committee, consisting of third grade student council members.  Students from Y.E.S.S put lids on each garbage can to force people to "Ask Before You Trash" and families helped by sending in snacks and lunches that were in earth friendly containers.  Each classroom that was able to throw less than ten items in the trash ALL DAY received a green star.  We did an amazing job and we thank the GREEN Committee and our Young Earth Savers for reminding us about the importance of respecting and taking care of our precious planet.

These lids went on each garbage can to remind us to Ask Before You Trash!

We also threw in an enrichment challenge in grade 3 to create things from recycled materials!

These are all of the trays we collected!

No School for Students Monday!

Tomorrow is a professional development day for teachers so there is no school for students. There is no school on Tuesday either. Spend a moment on Tuesday with your family thanking veterans and current members of our armed forces!
