Making a Difference Locally and Internationally

Students led our assembly today, introducing several innovative and philanthropic ideas to the entire school and our staff.  Two children introduced a fundraiser they have been organizing with Mrs. West, "Change for Children's."  We will be collecting change throughout the month of February to support Children's Hospital in Boston, a place many of our students and family members have called home for a shorter or longer period of time.

Another group of children presented their ideas for a new set of basketball hoops.  Their work has included collecting over 100 signatures, writing letters to our School Committee, TAA and The Playground Committee and hanging up posters to rally support.  Children also shared their logo contest idea they generated with Zillie Bhuju.  Children were asked to create logos that will be considered for water bottles, stickers and other goods to support endangered species.

We are so proud of our students at Steward School.  They are making a difference every day!

Thank you, Tri-Town Rotary!

Our third graders received their dictionaries this week from Dr. Creeden and Mr. Shannon, members of our Tri-Town Rotary. The rotary club has been very supportive of our third grade student council over the years. Thank you for this learning tool! The children immediately looked up "grit."

PEACE

In honor of Martin Luther King's birthday, I wanted to share this poem of peace written by the children, YES...THE CHILDREN, in Mrs. Casagrande's class. Amazing teamwork and a beautiful message!

Assembly with Mrs. E

Mrs. E taught the children in grades K and 1 all about the parts of their brain and how each time they learn it stretches...hence the visual.  The children really got this concept and were easily able to apply GRIT to this teaching!

Change is Simple

We had Change is Simple come and do an incredible lesson on understanding  plants and how insects are affected by the pesticides we use on plants to deflect them. Children played a tag game where they were first asked to find pictures of flowers they would be attracted to based on the type of bee they were given. They then had to wear goggles filled with scrunched up tape to feel the effects of pesticides, which blur the bees' vision. So interesting and fun!  Thank you, Zillie and GREEN Topsfield for bringing this to our school!

Polar Express at Steward

Before the break, Steward first graders, led by the musically talented Mindy Swanson, performed The Polar Express, complete with our own Superintendent, Dr. Creeden, as the narrator. The spirit was overflowing that day and we thank Miss Swanson and the children for their hard work and effort!
